See also the photos. ** Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus (Tauresium, 482[1]/483 – Constantinople, 14 November 565), known as Justinian I the Great (Greek: Φλάβιος Πέτρος Σαββάτιος Ιουστινιανός, Ioustinianos; Dutch, archaic: Justiniaan), was Roman emperor from 1 August 527 to 13 November 565. He is known for his attempt to restore the unity of the Roman Empire (after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476), but he did not succeed permanently in doing so. His reign is therefore considered the end of classical antiquity. Our information about his life and works mainly comes from the historian Procopius.
