Juliaan Severin (1888–1975) - Bloemenvaas met papavers

Flower vase with poppies Name of the artist or maker: Juliaan Severin (1888–1975) Title of the work: Flower vase with poppies Material and technique: Oil on panel. The paint is applied with visible, alternately thin and impasto brushstrokes. The petals in particular show pronounced relief. Brief biography of the artist: Juliaan Severin was born in Borgerhout in 1888 and died in Kruibeke in 1975. He was a Belgian painter, etcher, pastel artist and graphic artist. In addition to his training to become a teacher in Germanic languages, he pursued an artistic education at the Antwerp Academy. He became best known for etchings of old city quarters, beguinages and landscapes. His painted oeuvre includes landscapes, figures and still lifes with flowers, fruit and fish. The painting shows a light, delicately arranged bouquet of poppies in a round, blue-and-white decorated vase on a turquoise tabletop. The flowers are at different stages: next to open, pink and reddish blossoms, buds and seed pods are visible. A few fallen petals on the table enliven the still life. The composition is carried by long, curved stems and irregularly placed flower heads. The fresh blue-green of the table contrasts with the warm, gray-brown background. White, pink and carmine-red brushstrokes give the flowers light and volume. The loose brushwork and attention to color and light give the work an impressionistic feel. The combination of flowers and decorative ware aligns with Severin’s documented interest in still lifes. Dimensions and weight: Painting: 46 × 51 cm. Dimensions with frame: 50 × 56 cm.
