Tutte le aste / Libri, Mappe & Manoscritti / John Lesley - De origine Moribus & rebus gestis Scotorum - 1675
De Rebus Gestis Scotorum Posteriores Libri Tres from the famous historical treatise written by John Lesley (Joannes Leslaeus), bishop of Ross. bishop and supporter of Mary Stuart. Tratta la storia recente dei re di Scozia dal 1436 al 1562. There are 10 books; the first seven books offer a summarized overview of Scotland’s ancient history (often based on earlier chronicles such as Hector Boece), these last three books represent the most valuable and independent historiographical part. Lesley was a faithful adviser and ambassador of Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots). The last chapters offer an in-depth, first-hand narrative of the complex events of the Scottish Reformation and Mary’s reign, told from a strong Catholic perspective. This text served at the time as an important polemical counterpoint to the Protestant chronicles of George Buchanan and John Knox. Lesley began gathering materials and drafting the work in the vernacular during his eighteen months of imprisonment in the Tower of London (around 1570), where he had been confined for supporting Mary Stuart’s claims to the throne. Subsequently, during his exile in Europe, he translated and expanded the text into an elegant Latin humanist style to give it maximum diffusion at European courts. Pages: frontispiece damaged, blank page with ex libris, 543 pages, scotorum regnum 2 pages, 1 page provinces, index 40 pages, 2 blank pages, Spedizione tramite corriere espresso
