John Hancock 1783 Signed Appointment

Original Commonwealth of Massachusetts appointment signed by John Hancock as Governor, dated September 25, 1783, in Boston. The partially printed document appoints Col. Chandler of Gloucester, Massachusetts, as Coroner of Cumberland County, authorizing him to perform the duties of that office. Boldly signed "John Hancock" with his characteristic elaborate signature, and countersigned by John Avery Jr. as Secretary. The document bears the embossed seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dated just weeks after the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783, which formally ended the American Revolutionary War, this appointment was issued during Hancock's second term as Governor of Massachusetts. Hancock, President of the Second Continental Congress and the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, remained a leading political figure in the newly independent United States. The exceptionally bold, large and beautifully executed signature is one of the finest examples of John Hancock's autograph to appear on the market, with remarkably strong ink and an impressive overall presentation. Exhibits original folds, scattered foxing, toning and minor edge wear. Document measures approximately 9 x 13 inches as seen, framed to 25.5 x 21 inches. Not examined out of frame. Estimate $4,000 - $6,000
