JOCELYN GUMIRRMIRR Liyagawumirr language, born 1974 Untitled, 2016 & Untitled, 2016 ochre on paper 76 x 58 cm (each); 78.5 x 60 cm (framed each) bears inscription verso: JOCELYN GUMIRRMIRR, 76 x 56, 3134-16 & 3135-16 PROVENANCE Milingimbi Art and Culture, Northern Territory, Cat No. 3134-16 & 3135-16 Dennis and Debra Scholl Collection, United States of America Born in Darwin in 1974, shortly before Cyclone Tracy devastated the city, Jocelyn Gumirrmirr moved with her family to Galiwin'ku on Elcho Island, where she was raised. She is the daughter of painter and lawman Jeffery Walkundjawuy and the niece of celebrated Elcho Island artist Micky Durrng. During the 1990s, while living at Langarra homeland on Howard Island, Gumirrmirr spent considerable time with Durrng, learning the ancestral stories and painting traditions of the Liyagawumirr clan. Following his death, responsibility for maintaining and continuing this cultural knowledge passed to his nieces and nephews, including Gumirrmirr. After a period away from painting, Gumirrmirr returned to her artistic practice in 2009, working across bark, canvas, works on paper, hollow logs and Macassan smoking pipes. Her practice draws upon the cultural knowledge and artistic traditions passed to her through her family, continuing an important lineage of Liyagawumirr painting from north-east Arnhem Land. These two ochre works on paper offer an intimate expression of this tradition. Working with natural ochres, Gumirrmirr brings the visual language and disciplined mark-making associated with north-east Arnhem Land painting to the more immediate format of paper. Together, the works speak to the transmission of knowledge across generations and Gumirrmirr's place within a continuing family and cultural tradition of painting. © JOCELYN WAMUTJAN GUMIRRMIRR / Copyright Agency, 2026
