We present to you this superb oil on panel depicting an old stone bridge spanning a canal, lined with half-timbered houses, under a cloudy sky lit by a crescent moon. Boats and figures animate the scene, and a Gothic spire stands out in the background. The work is signed at the bottom right “J. Drevet,” accompanied by a dedication and a date. Joannès Drevet, whose real name was Jean-Baptiste Drevet, was born in Lyon on May 25, 1854, and died in Lyon in 1940. A painter, engraver, lithographer, and watercolorist, he devoted most of his time to painting and travel. He exhibited in Lyon at the Salon des Amis des Arts, then at the Salons at the Grand Palais. His work mainly features views of Lyon and its surroundings, but also Venice.
