Jewellery box - Wood, Glass

A remarkable antique lacquered wooden vanity and jewellery box, probably of East Asian – possibly Chinese – origin, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1920. The substantial box is constructed from wood and finished in deep black lacquer. Its unusual, almost book-like form opens to reveal a large rectangular mirror fitted into the inside of the lid and a spacious compartment for jewellery or personal accessories. The exterior is particularly striking. Against the black lacquer is a hand-executed Asian waterside landscape in warm gold, ochre, green and reddish tones, with palm trees, traditional architecture and a sailing vessel. At the centre is the most remarkable feature: a finely carved, raised appliqué depicting an Asian junk, with dramatically pleated ivory-coloured sails, a detailed hull and tiny figures. Unlike the surrounding painted decoration, the boat projects considerably from the surface, creating an unusual three-dimensional effect. The exact geographical origin has not been established. The sailing vessel and decorative vocabulary suggest a Chinese or wider East Asian influence, while lacquerware of this type was also produced elsewhere for the international market around the turn of the 20th century. For this reason, no definitive country attribution is claimed. The construction, traditional metal hinges, slotted screws, layered lacquer surface and naturally aged mirror are consistent with an antique piece. Areas of wear reveal a characteristic reddish-brown ground beneath the black finish. The mirror shows considerable natural ageing, spotting and oxidation to the reflective layer. It has not been described as a mercury mirror, as this cannot be established without further examination. The box remains in authentic unrestored condition, with losses and wear to the lacquer, particularly along the edges and corners, scratches and other traces of age and use. These imperfections are clearly visible in the photographs and form part of the object's antique character. An unusual and highly decorative survivor combining the functions of a vanity box, jewellery box and dressing mirror, with an exceptionally attractive raised sailing-boat decoration. Period: Late 19th / early 20th century, c. 1890–1920 Probable origin: East Asia, possibly China Material: Lacquered wood, mirror glass, painted and raised carved decoration Dimensions: 32.2 × 26.5 × 7.2 cm Interior mark: Hand-applied number “26”, original function unknown Condition: Antique condition with significant authentic wear and patina; please refer carefully to all photographs.
