Hardinge, first edition, issue with 'foorthe' in fourth line of title, some black letter, title with large woodcut printer's device, woodcut decorative initials, lacking 2Z3&4, 3P1-6 and final sig. 3R1-6, title torn and laid down, with loss of a couple of letters, water-stained, mostly at ends, occasional spotting, lightly browned, 19th century endpapers, contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, lacking clasps, rebacked, preserving original backstrip in compartments with later leather label, some worming to covers, rubbed and scuffed, [STC 14600.5; ESTC S112182], small folio, Imprinted at London in Fleetestreate, at the signe of the Elephante, by Henry VVykes, 27th October, 1567. sold not subject to return. *** Published as part of an ongoing debate with Thomas Harding, A Defence of the Apologie ensured that Jewel was recognised as 'the champion of, and for a time the most famous bishop in, the English reformed church.' (ODNB).
