JESSE SMALL (AMERICAN, B.1974) 'PLAYER 1' CHANDELIER; DESIGNED 2008 Cut steel and gilt lustre fired porcelain 320cm hang, 200cm diameter Jesse Small, originally from Los Angeles and currently the artist in residence at the Angels Gate Cultural Centre in San Pedro, California, is recognised for his inventive use of metal across public art, architecture and design. Player 1, a chandelier conceived in 2008, continues this exploration of material and ornament. Cut steel is worked into a dense, branching structure, animated with gilt-lustre porcelain lights that fuse fragility with strength. In Small's words, it "exposes the rules of decoration by inserting some oddity into classic forms." Reflecting on the piece with his students, he remarked that "it's easy to ignore a sculpture on a pedestal or the floor. But with a chandelier, everyone looks up." This reorientation of attention places Player 1 within a wider contemporary dialogue, alongside artists such as Jorge Pardo, Ingo Maurer and Cerith Wyn Evans, who have similarly reimagined the chandelier as both sculpture and spatial intervention. Condition Report: The sculptural chandelier is in very good condition. No breaks or losses. The 50 high-fire porcelain pieces with a variety of silver and gold lustre, some mixed, some decorated with the vintage space invaders pattern - hence 'Player 1'. All metal elements in excellent condition with even, intended mottled, matt silver finish. It should be noted that the piece has no lighting fitments or fittings. A single light blub could be suspended through the centre, to make it a light, or an expert could look at a variety of ways to light it at the point of installation.
