The author led a restless military and private life: having defected to the English enemy, he was condemned to death by customary law by the war council in 1810, returned to France in 1814 during the First Restoration and relieved of all condemnation by royal decision. A few years later, he was condemned for bigamy to ten years of forced labor. [Quérard, La France littéraire, p. 45.] Historical context (1812–1815) • The Russian Campaign (1812): In June 1812, Napoleon I invaded Russia with the Grande Armée. Despite entering Moscow, Russian resistance, the harsh winter, and the tragic retreat (marked by the Berezina) decimate the French troops. • The German Campaign (1813): Known in German as Befreiungskriege (wars of liberation), it sees the German states gradually turn against Napoleon after his defeats to join the Sixth Coalition (comprising notably Russia, Prussia, Austria, and the United Kingdom). The decisive Battle of Leipzig (October 1813) forces the Grande Armée to retreat toward France. • The Congress of Vienna (1815): After Napoleon’s final downfall (marked by Waterloo in June 1815), the Congress of Vienna redraws Europe’s map: Russia extends its influence, Prussia enlarges (Saxe, the Rhineland) and the German Confederation.
