I present here the authentic etching of the beautiful iconic artwork, “Des glaneuses .” - by Marcel Jacque after Jean-Francois Millet (1814 – 1875) - a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet" on the lower right and "Marcel Jacque" on the upper edge! ———////——— “Des glaneuses”(1857) - is iconic and one of the most well known of Millet's paintings. During his years of preparatory studies, Millet contemplated how best to convey the sense of repetition and fatigue in the peasants' daily lives. Lines traced over each woman's back lead to the ground and then back up in a repetitive motion identical to their unending, backbreaking labor. Along the horizon, the setting sun silhouettes the farm with its abundant stacks of grain, in contrast to the large shadowy figures in the foreground. The dark homespun dresses of the gleaners cut robust forms against the golden field, giving each woman an aura of strength. Jean-François Millet painted “Des glaneuses” in 1857 to pay tribute to the dignity of poor peasants and represent the reality of rural life of his time. Born into a family of Norman peasants, he knows intimately the harshness of the work of the land and wants to paint what he has lived. Millet refuses misery but chooses to give these three curved women a size and nobility worthy of historical or religious figures. Its imagery of bending peasant women gleaning was paraphrased frequently in works by younger artists such as Pissaro, Renoir, Seurat and Van Gogh. His work also influenced the Austrian Albin Egger-Lienz. Millet is noted for his paintings of peasant farmers and can be categorized as part of the Realism Art Movement. He found the theme an eternal one, linked to stories from the Old Testament. Toward the end of his career, he became increasingly interested in painting pure landscapes.
