Jean-Charles Werner (1798–1856) - Set of 4: Water Rail

This set of four hand-coloured ornithological plates presents birds of very different habitats, from wetland and forest to arctic coast and open sea. Each bird is shown individually on a simple ground, with careful attention to plumage, colouring and characteristic posture. Water Rail: a secretive wetland bird standing in profile on a grassy mound, showing its long reddish bill, brown streaked upperparts, slate-blue neck and breast and boldly barred flanks. Gyrfalcon: the largest of the falcons, a powerful bird of prey of the Arctic, perched on a weathered branch. Its hooked beak, strong talons and finely mottled plumage are rendered with precision. Long prized above all other hunting birds, the gyrfalcon was traditionally reserved for kings in medieval falconry. Common Pheasant: a colourful game bird standing in profile on rocky ground, with iridescent green head, red facial wattle, richly patterned breast feathers and long, elegant tail. Great Northern Diver: a large diving bird of northern waters, known in North America as the Common Loon, standing in profile on a small patch of ground. The plate shows its dagger-like bill, dark iridescent head and neck, striped white collar and chequered back. The plates come from Jean-Charles Werner's Atlas des oiseaux d'Europe, published in Paris from 1826 onwards as an illustrated companion to the Manuel d'ornithologie of the Dutch naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck, the standard reference on European birds of the time. Issued in parts over many years, the atlas aimed to depict every European species. Its hand-coloured plates combine scientific accuracy with clear, elegant presentation, making the work a valuable aid to identification and an attractive record of European birdlife. Jean-Charles Werner (1798–1856) was a natural history painter of Swiss origin who worked in Paris. A pupil of the celebrated animal and flower painters of his day, he became attached to the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, where he painted many of the vélins, the prestigious series of natural history paintings on vellum begun in the seventeenth century. Werner specialised in birds and mammals and supplied illustrations for numerous scientific publications. His work is distinguished by its accuracy, refined colouring and sensitive rendering of feather and fur. Artist or Maker: Jean-Charles Werner Dimensions: Approximately 21 cm x 23 cm (each).
