Japanese Meiji Carved Ivory Okimono of a Fisherman with Net

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to early Taisho period. A carved ivory okimono of a fisherman. He leans forward with a broad, creased smile, his right foot planted on a rock that rises from a stepped oval base. His shaven head carries a small topknot. A coil of rope hangs from his raised left hand, and a heavy net falls over his left shoulder and down his side, its mesh cut row by row. His right hand gathers the net at his hip, and a traditional grass skirt is tied to his waist. Engraving filled with dark pigment picks out chrysanthemums and lattice patterns across his tunic. The underside is engraved with a leafy branch and set with a red lacquer seal cartouche. This item is made of or contains elephant and qualifies for exemption under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an antique. Due to strict federal and state regulations governing the sale and transport of ivory, this item may not be shipped internationally or to residents of the following U.S. jurisdictions: CA, CT, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, VT, and WA.
