Jan Miel (1599-1663), Circle of - L'Accademia degli Ubriachi

- Oil on canvas. Canvas lined on antique date. Elegant frame from the early 19th century. - The sober majesty of the Eternal City leaps to pieces in this disdelightful print of an academic bacchanal, where the triumph of intellect is not crowned with sober speeches or austere prayers, but with the thunderous tumult of spilled wine and the frank intoxication of newly graduated students in full Goliardic delirium. Under a golden, dusty light that makes everything equal, the laureated youths —carried away by the exuberance of victory and the smoke of the tavern— turn the Roman alley into their own bufo scene: cards fly on the table between brazen bets, barrels are emptied with Bacchic avidity, and, as the culmination of the buffoonery, the sacred crown of laurels that should encircle the brow of the scholar hangs, daringly insolent, from the post of the inn’s façade on the left. This lively bufo scene of university celebration in full Rome perfectly captures the spirit of the Bamboccianti, a group of painters, mainly Dutch and Flemish, who revolutionized the Roman artistic scene in the first half of the 17th century with their genre scenes of a realistic and often humorous character. Pieter van de Laer, nicknamed "Il Bamboccio" (the rag doll), was the leader of this current, and his style, characterized by rustic figures, an earthy palette and a focus on everyday life of the popular classes, became a reference for artists like Jan Miel. Miel, of Flemish origin, was one of van de Laer’s most prominent followers in Rome and later in Turin, where his work evolved toward a more elegant style while maintaining an interest in popular scenes that defines the Bamboccianti. The artistic wanderings of the Bamboccianti through the Rome of their time were not limited to painting in their studios, but they integrated into the city’s life, frequenting taverns and markets, where they found inspiration for their works and often traded paintings for food and wine. This connection with social reality and their disdain for academic conventions, which often marginalized their works, made them an influential group, especially in promoting genre painting in Italy. Their works, full of life and anecdotes, like the crown-throwing in this painting, offer a valuable testimony of Roman Seicento popular culture and the vitality of this artistic current which, despite early criticism, eventually gained recognition and collectors. - Image dimensions without frame: 76 x 60.5 cm / 89.5 x 64 cm with exclusive bespoke frame.
