J. P. Oud: Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud is one of the defining architects of European modernism and was closely connected to the avant-garde movement De Stijl. In his designs he merged functional architecture with a clear geometric language and the use of pure colors. Projects like the famous Cafe De Unie in Rotterdam from 1925 show his attempt to translate principles of neoplastic painting into architectural façade design. As city architect of Rotterdam, Oud also realized numerous socially oriented housing projects and profoundly influenced the development of international modernism.
