Privately I am selling a Shew Xit camera in polished mahogany and aluminium. Darlot-type lens with depth-of-field adjustment, leaf shutter, Shew pneumatic trigger. All in excellent condition considering its age. Included with two double backings and its original leather carrying case in good condition. Patented in the late 19th century by London manufacturer J.F. Shew & Co., "The XIT" represents one of the earliest designs in compact, collapsible hand-and-stand plate cameras. Utilizing an ingenious system of folding struts paired with an aluminum-reinforced mahogany body, it provided Victorian photographers with unprecedented portability without sacrificing structural rigidity. This specific Aluminium variant features the maker's signature celluloid medallion, reflecting Newman Street craftsmanship from London's historic photographic production district. Today, surviving complete sets with matching maker-marked leather cases serve as pivotal historical markers in the evolution of early field photography.
