ARUNDEL CODE - MS 263 - Leonardo da Vinci Facsimile reproduction and critical study of the Arundel Codex (officially known as Arundel MS 263), one of the most important collections of Leonardo da Vinci’s autograph sheets. The original manuscript, consisting of 283 sheets of varying sizes, is currently kept in London at the British Library. The code did not originate as a single notebook, but as an "odds and ends" collection (a miscellany of loose sheets) that spans almost Leonardo’s mature life, from 1478 to 1518. It takes its name from Count Henry Howard of Arundel, who purchased it in the 17th century. Being a spontaneous collection taken directly from the scientist’s writing desk, the topics continually range across different disciplines: - Physics and Mechanics: The central core of the codex. It includes detailed studies on weights, force, kinematics, and gravity. - Euclidean Geometry and Mathematics: Numerous pages trace theorems, calculations, and studies on squaring the circle or on the center of gravity of solids. - Optics: Leonardo explores the propagation of light, the nature of shadows, and the mechanisms of vision. - Hydraulics and Astronomy: There are diagrams on the movements of water, canalization of rivers, and reflections on celestial bodies. - Architecture and Urban Planning: Of extreme historical significance are the projects developed by Leonardo for the colossal and never-realized royal residence of King Francis I at Romorantin, in France. - Personal notes and Literature: The codex reveals the more intimate side of the genius with brief expense notes, everyday notes, but also imaginative pieces such as fables, fantastic descriptions (the famous description of the sea monster and the cave) and riddles.
