Italy - Raro Gettone della Sottoscrizione Nazionale...

Lot Description: In auction, a fascinating and rare piece of Italian history from the first half of the 20th century. It is not an official currency coin, but a famous commemorative token (often collected in numismatics and militaria circles) issued on the occasion of the historic patriotic mobilization of November 1925. Historical context and meaning: On November 18, 1925, the Kingdom of Italy issued a very important royal decree-law to regulate the repayment of the massive debts contracted with the United States of America during World War I. To support the state finances in this delicate economic transition, a grand national fundraising campaign was promoted, called the "Dollar Subscription". All citizens, both in Italy and among emigrant communities abroad, were asked for an extraordinary contribution. The minimum and symbolic participation quota was set at 25 lire, a sum that at the time corresponded exactly to the exchange value of one American dollar. Object details: On the obverse or reverse of the piece appears the famous and iconic official inscription: "Versò un dollaro per la Patria" (He poured one dollar for the Fatherland), accompanied by the millesimal date in Roman numerals "18 XI 1925". This piece was given to donors as a tangible receipt, a patriotic and lasting metal memento attesting to their active participation in the restoration of the national debt. Condition and rarity: The item presents in generally optimal condition, considering that it is over a century old and of the metal type. The reliefs of the inscriptions and the date are perfectly legible, sharp, and display a beautiful period patina that enhances its historical charm and authenticity. An exceptional piece to enrich collections of medals and tokens from the era, of Italian economic history, or World War II-era relics.
