The city and the gulf occupy the background, while in the broad foreground infantry and cavalry units advance amid the smoke of the clashes. To the right, a group of figures observes the events from a height. The wide cloudy sky gives depth to the panoramic composition. The title, engraved beneath the scene, bears the date in the French Republican calendar. The hand coloring distinguishes urban architecture, uniforms, and the landscape, accompanying the hatchwork of the engraving. Historical-artistic note Carle Vernet was among the leading figures in depicting French military campaigns around the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This plate belongs to a series devoted to events in Italy: its panoramic cut merges military chronicle with a view of Naples. A correction of attribution compared to the initial data: the inscription at the bottom right reads «Terminé par Delaunay», not Louvet. The etching is attributed by the central inscription to Duplessi-Bertaux. Condition report Sheet with wide margins and a white verso. There are light waviness and creases in the paper, with one crease more evident at the upper edge and modest signs of aging, visible also on the reverse. Impression and inscriptions preserved and legible.
