Tutte le aste / Libri, Mappe & Manoscritti / Italy - Italian Peninsula; Gilles Robert de Vaugondy...

Fascinating and detailed geographical map of the Italian peninsula, originally designed by the famous geographers of King Robert de Vaugondy and published in the fortunate revised and corrected edition by their editorial successor, C.F. Delamarche, who acquired the plates in Paris at the end of the eighteenth century. The map captures the political and territorial situation of pre-unitary and pre-Napoleonic Italy. In the upper right stands the elegant dash-cartouche, oblong and underlined by a double two-tone border (red and yellow). In the lower right is the section dedicated to the graphic scales (Echelle), expressed in Italian miles and league hours. The engraving describes with precision the topography of the era, indicating the main mountain ranges as prospective small hills, the hydrography of the rivers and the historical toponymy of the principal cities and regions (including a visible portion of the Dalmatian and Balkan coasts). • The map is printed on antique hand-laid paper. In the center one clearly notes the original central editorial crease, a completely normal element since the plate was folded in two to be bound inside the Atlante volume. • The Coloring: The hand-watercolored borders remain vivid and clearly distinguishable. The typical slight oxidation of the green pigment (often copper-based) is noticeable, which tends to shift slightly or darken over time, a typical sign of the coloring’s authenticity.
