In the center dominates the knight on an elegant, richly barded steed, accompanied by a young man with a falcon and a servant with a greyhound; on the right, other hunting dogs pursue the prey. In the background a fanciful walled city unfolds, with churches, towers, and architectures clearly derived from medieval and Renaissance sources. The work deliberately revisits the language of profane 15th-century Italian painting, with references to the decorations of wedding cassoni (chests) and to courteous and venatorial scenes of central Italy: clear profiles, still-intuitive perspective, figures arranged in paratactical sequence, rich trappings and vegetation described in a decorative manner. The result is a suggestive nineteenth-century interpretation of the figurative culture of the quattrocento. Condition report: the panel is overall in discrete condition for its age. There are signs of surface wear and abrasions, color alterations and inhomogeneities, surface deposits and possible prior painting/restorations. On the reverse, there are stains, signs of use and old fixing elements.
