Indonesian Batak Panel - XIX-XX

Ancient Toba Batak architectural panel (Singa or Santung North Sumatra) An anthropomorphic figure of rhomboid shape, covered with dense geometric motifs, which served as a spiritual guardian in Batak traditional houses. The back shows aging wear consistent with a panel originally displayed outdoors. There is also a carved section for a mortise that testifies to how the object was historically used for its function. The residues and stratifications of Batak ritual tricromia are clearly visible: black, red, and small touches of white, with a dull oxidized patina partially absorbed by the wood, a dating consistent with the object could be between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. As per the photo, one dowel is missing and there are small damages that authenticate the object. Due to the substantial size, collection is required from the Linate Airport area (Milan).
