INDIAN STEEL TABAR BATTLE AXE WITH ENGRAVED CALLIGRAPHIC DECORATION

Ca. AD 1800�1900 An Indian steel tabar battle axe featuring a broad, crescent-shaped blade with sharply pointed extremities and an elaborately engraved central section. The blade is decorated with intricate calligraphic compositions arranged within interlacing geometric and vegetal motifs, with traces of gold-coloured ornamentation along the outer edges. The axe head is fitted with a substantial rectangular hammer poll, similarly embellished with engraved decorative motifs, and surmounted by a prominent spherical finial. The cylindrical steel haft displays pronounced spiral fluting, creating a distinctive twisted appearance. The metal surfaces retain a dark brown patina with areas of oxidation, wear and discolouration. Size: 81.3mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000.
