INDIA, Santal - Lot 27

INDIA, Santal Dhodro banam (sarangi), carved from wood, featuring a rectangular soundbox and a body carved with a motif of six closed compartments separated by latticework, and topped by six standing female figures wearing tall headdresses held in place at the back by large medallions with rosettes. Consecration inscriptions engraved on either side of the pegbox. H. 85 cm. Base. The dhodro banam, literally “hollow instrument,” is a bowed string instrument of the Santal community, native to central India, particularly Orissa. It is related to the sarinda and the sarangi, of which it is a simplified form. It generally has one or two strings and is played with a bow. Its partially open soundbox is covered at the bottom with a skin that contributes to sound production. The barlong pegbox is a distinctive feature of the instrument and may be richly adorned with carvings depicting human or animal figures. These decorations, which are both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic, attest to the symbolic and artistic importance of the dhodro banam within Santal culture.
