Rare pair of binding plates (manuscript covers) in painted wood North India / Kashmir or Rajasthan, 19th century Pair of rectangular wooden binding plates, forming the exterior of a traditional manuscript cover (pothi or grand codex). Each plate presents a dense, exuberant narrative composition in opaque pigment (gouache or tempera) enhanced with gold under a protective lacquer-like varnish. The scenes are framed by a rich, continuous floral border on a gold-yellow ground, characteristic of Indian decorative productions of this period. Left plate: A scene of an audience or mythical court taking place under a red canopy or draped tent. In the center, a figure sits majestically on a throne, surrounded by demon-like figures (asuras or rakshasas) with dark or horned skin, musicians and attendants. The lower portion shows rituals and figures near a brazier or an altar, supported by totemic structures. Right plate: Representation of a similar audience scene, dominated at the top by a deity or sovereign with dark skin, seated on a leopard or tiger skin. The lower register depicts a melee or dynamic battle scene involving demons and armed warriors. The complex iconography appears to illustrate passages from great epics or mythological texts (such as episodes from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, or the Devi Mahatmya evoking underground worlds or battles of mythical creatures). Material: Opaque pigments and gold on rigid wooden panels, Good overall condition for its age. Signs of wear, light paint loss, and surface craquelure visible on the edges and the central hinge, attesting to the object's antiquity and authenticity. The preservation of both plates (complete pair) is rare on the market, many having been separated over time. The vivid palette (reds, saffron yellows, greens) and the level of detail of the mythological figures make it a highly decorative and sought-after piece. Magnificent!
