Canadian. A rare embroidered scripture quilt from Peterborough County made by ten-year-old Bevin McKee, who, according to family history, was suffering from a terminal illness. The quilt was always considered a family heirloom due to the situation of its creation and the fact that the woollen yarn used was dyed from plants found on the family farm. Dated 1840, the quilt is profusely embroidered with birds, hearts, geometric shapes, and floral motifs, with the central area having a larger bird that looks like it is wearing a scarf. Solemn messages and scripture surround the centre image. One poignant text reads: "Bevin McKee is my name, the grass is green the rose is red, this is my name I am ded". Also included are the symbols alpha and omega, symbolizing the beginning and the end; perhaps Bevin was aware of her limited time.
