Tutte le aste / Fotografia / Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976) - Triangles

"Triangles" (1928) is one of the most celebrated and defining photographs by American photographer Imogen Cunningham. It is widely recognized as a masterpiece of photographic modernism that captures her transition from early, soft-focused Pictorialism into a bold, sharp-focus avant-garde aesthetic. • Abstraction of the Body: The photograph is a close-up, cropped study of the female nude. It shows a left side view of a woman's body from the shoulder down to the hip, centering on the breast. • Geometric Forms: Rather than presenting a traditional, sentimental nude, Cunningham meticulously framed the composition to transform the human anatomy into an arrangement of interlocking geometric shapes, angles, and rounded contours. • Light and Shadow: The image functions as a profound study of light, shape, and pattern. Despite its strong reliance on clean, minimalist geometry, the photograph retains a distinct sense of warmth, sensuality, and emotional texture. The Move to Modernism • Group f/64 Aesthetic: "Triangles" perfectly encapsulates the philosophy that Cunningham would champion a few years later as a co-founder of Group f/64 (alongside Ansel Adams and Edward Weston). The group rejected the painterly, manipulated styles of the past in favor of "pure" or "straight" photography, emphasizing maximum depth of field and razor-sharp focus on everyday forms. • Artistic Balance: Created during a phase where the responsibilities of raising a family constrained her travel, Cunningham turned her lens toward tight, intimate subjects close to home—initially plants and flowers, and subsequently these highly geometric, tightly cropped human forms.
