Ice Age Woolly Mammoth Fossil Ivory Tusk Schreger Lines | Custom Stand

North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Pleistocene epoch. A single sweeping tusk of the woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius, its long parabolic curve tapering from a weathered, broken root end to a smooth rounded tip. The fossil ivory has been polished to a warm cream and honey surface, revealing the laminated dentine and the faint crosshatch of Schreger lines that identify true proboscidean ivory. Mineral staining mottles the length in bands of tan and ochre, a record of the sediments in which the tusk lay. The proximal end preserves the flaking, fibrous texture of the alveolar socket, left unrestored. Tusks such as this are permanently growing upper incisors, used in life for stripping bark, sparring, and sweeping snow from forage. The specimen is presented on an included custom hardwood cradle stand that lifts the arc clear of the surface. Mammoth ivory reaches the market almost entirely from the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska, where seasonal thaw and riverbank erosion release tusks that have lain frozen since the last glaciation. Because Mammuthus primigenius has been extinct for roughly ten thousand years (with a relict population surviving on Wrangel Island until about 1700 BCE), its ivory falls outside CITES and the elephant ivory prohibitions, and it has long served carvers as a legal substitute. The Schreger pattern, the angled intersecting lines visible in cross section, remains the standard forensic test distinguishing mammoth from elephant: mammoth ivory characteristically shows acute angles below roughly ninety degrees, elephant ivory obtuse ones. Individual jurisdictions nonetheless regulate sale and transport of all ivory differently; buyers should confirm local statutes. This item is made of or contains mammoth ivory and qualifies for exemption under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) as an antique. Due to strict federal and state regulations governing the sale and transport of ivory, this item may not be shipped internationally or to residents of the following U.S. jurisdictions: CA, CT, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, VT, and WA. Buyers are solely responsible for ensuring that their purchase complies with all applicable local, state, and federal laws regarding the acquisition, possession, resale, or transfer of ivory. While we guarantee that this item meets the criteria for ESA exemption under federal law, we strongly recommend that prospective buyers consult with local authorities to verify legal eligibility in their jurisdiction.
