In the mid-1930s, German automobile manufacturers were commissioned to design an affordable and practical car to bring as many Germans as possible onto the road and lead the country into the automobile era. The result was the Volkswagen, or "People's Car", Type 1 sedan. Today better known as the Beetle, the Type 1 became the best-selling car of all time in 1972 and surpassed Ford's Model T. To honor this iconic vehicle, Mattel Creations and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) collaborated to create a collectible replica of the 1959 automobile in the museum's collection.
