Janssen ranks among the most significant German artists of the 20th century, and his works show clear influences from masters such as Albrecht Dürer and Francisco de Goya. Similar to Dürer in his copper engravings and to Goya in his Los Caprichos, Janssen used printmaking to depict complex, often disturbing scenarios that delve deeply into the human psyche. A central theme in Janssen’s work is obsessive self-observation, bringing him close to Egon Schiele and Francis Bacon. Schiele, known for his unflinching self-portraits, and Bacon, who often depicted the human figure as a distorted and suffering being, shared with Janssen an interest in exploring the inner self.
