Amsterdam School • saying board 'As the clock ticks at home' • ca. 1920–1930 Saying board with a knitting woman and a reading girl by the fireplace, the pendulum between two vases, surrounded by blue flowers on olive-green scrolling. Unnoticed; from the Holland Handelsmerk series, a trademark under which porcelain by Gutherz also appeared. Saying board of earthenware in the style of the Amsterdam School, circa 1920–1930, from the Holland Handelsmerk saying series. The proverb runs in green stencil letters around a living-room scene: a knitting woman and a reading girl under the pendulum on the mantel. This is the olive-green version; the model also exists in bright green. For this object a Buy now price has also been set for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting. At a glance: Material: white earthenware, stencil decoration hand-painted, transparent glaze Dimensions: diameter 22.5 cm Weight: 387 grams Brand: no factory mark, signature, or label; back white Dating: ca. 1920–1930 Origin: from the collection of Decaders Gallery Description and context: Round plate with a flat flag and shallow mirror, with two hanging holes in the foot ring. The proverb reads: Zoo as het klokje thuis tikt, tikt het nergens. The woman sits in an ocher-yellow dress on a reddish-brown chair, the girl in green on a blue stool. Behind them hangs a cobalt blue cloth over the mantel. A band of blue squares finishes the mirror. On the flag are ten blue flowers with yellow centers between olive-green scrolling. The same model is documented in three examples in the collectors’ catalog LastDodo. Condition: Good. Glaze: crazing on front and back. Back, edge: a 'chip' that was glazed over at the factory, a manufacturing defect and no damage. Decoration: on the flag and in a few letters small spots where the green is missing. Foot ring: unglazed, with light deposits. No restorations observed. See the photographs. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food. In the interior: Fits an Amsterdam School, Art Deco, or country-style interior, on the wall of a living room or kitchen. The cobalt blue and olive-green hold up beside oak and Delftware. Shipping: Professionally packaged in a sturdy box with padding, for fragile objects a double box. Always insured shipping with Track and Trace. See the feedback from previous buyers. Attribution and sources: Holland Handelsmerk, based on a visual comparison with the same model in the collectors’ catalog LastDodo; this exemplar is inconspicuous. Holland Handelsmerk is a trademark and not a factory. Under this brand, porcelain with linear decoration, executed by Gutherz in Altrohlau, appeared around 1915. The Botterweg Auctions archive links that design to Bert Nienhuis. No designer is claimed. You can follow me above by bookmarking my page and clicking the heart to follow beside 'DECADERS Gallery'.
