Hohokam Sacaton Phase Mountain Lion Effigy, Possible Whistle - TL Tested

Native American, Hohokam, Sacaton phase. A four-legged creature modeled in buff earthenware, its body a smooth elongated barrel raised on four sturdy tapering legs, the head lifted and thrust forward on a thick neck. The modeling is deliberately spare: shallow depressions mark the eyes, the muzzle terminates in a blunt snout, and a small perforation pierces the side of the head. Surfaces retain a warm caramel-to-cream tonality with mineral bloom, unslipped and unpainted. The hollow body and the aperture suggest the piece may have functioned as a whistle or sound-producing effigy, though it could equally have served as a small effigy vessel. Zoomorphic figures of this scale are uncommon in the Hohokam ceramic repertoire, which favors decorated red-on-buff bowls and jars over sculptural work. The missing lower section of the face appears to have been done deliberately as part of a "killing" ritual. The Sacaton phase (roughly 950 to 1150 CE) marks the height of Hohokam expansion across the Gila and Salt River valleys of what is now southern Arizona, when irrigation canals ran for tens of miles, ballcourts anchored village plans, and Sacaton Red-on-buff pottery circulated widely through the Sonoran Desert exchange network. Sculptural ceramics remain a minor and poorly documented strand of that tradition; the surviving figurines and effigies are mostly small human forms, with animal subjects rarer still. Excavated examples from Snaketown and related sites include ceramic whistles and ocarinas, so the possibility that this quadruped was intended to sound is consistent with the known repertoire rather than an invention of the market. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
