HISTORY OF THE FOUR SONS OF AYMON, very noble and very valiant knights. Paris, H. Launette, 1883. In-4, brown morocco, incised and dyed leather inlaid on the front cover, spine with five double raised bands, inner border decorated with a purple fillet adorned with gold dots and green fleurons, decorated and mosaic-patterned panels in the center of the sides and wheels at the corners, lining and endpapers of rep cloth with a multicolored fruit design, gilt edges, cover and spine, half-morocco slipcase, case (P. Affolter). A famous book illustrated by Eugène Grasset, the first to be printed in color using a new process—invented by Charles Gillot—combining photogravure and chromography. His compositions, which cover the book’s 242 pages, spill over into the text, marking a complete break with the conventions of the illustrated book of the time. The book thus stands as a precursor to Art Nouveau. One of the first 100 copies printed on Imperial Japan paper, bound by Affolter and adorned with incised and dyed leather signed by Jolly. It is enhanced by an original full-page gouache depicting a troop of armored soldiers approaching a fortified city and a large double-page watercolor depicting a wild boar hunt, both signed. Without the continuation on China paper, as announced in the colophon.
