Women’s handbag Hermès in crocodile skin, Fonsbelle model, Paris, 1940s This handbag from the house of Hermès, measuring 25 cm in length, 17 cm in height and 11 cm in depth, is entirely made of genuine crocodile skin in a cognac-mahogany color, with a pronounced natural grain and the characteristic gloss of tanned Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) or saltwater crocodile (C. porosus), with distinctly individualized scales, larger on the body and finer, tighter on the side gussets and the flap. The construction is firm and rectangular, with two gussets, saddle-stitching in apparent ecru thread all around. The front flap closes with Hermès’ characteristic H clasp, in solid gilt brass with a highly geometric and angular form. The single, flat, rigid handle, made from the same crocodile leather, allows carrying at the wrist or in the crook of the elbow. The interior is lined in fawn-grained leather, with a central snap-closure pocket in natural leather and side slit pockets. The brand is stamped in gold on the inside: “HERMÈS PARIS / 24 Fg ST HONORÉ”. The absence of a date-letter in a square, a system Hermès did not adopt for dating its productions until 1971, confirms that this piece predates that year. Completely unrestored, with its patina of time.
