HERMANUS KOEKKOEK SENIOR (DUTCH 1815-1882) SHIP AT ANCHOR ON A CALM SEA Oil on canvas Signed and dated '1836' (lower right) 29 x 39cm (11¼ x 15¼in.) Provenance: The Cooling Galleries, London Condition Report: The canvas does not appear to be lined but is providing good support. A small abrasion with an associated paint loss is present to the sky in the lower left quadrant. Occasional superficial scratches. Craquelure is present across the image but the surface appears to be largely stable. A small area of overpaint is visible in natural light just below the centre of the extreme left edge. Inspection under UV reveals some strengthening to the ships and shore, as well as to the wood and corner in the lower right quadrant. Further areas of retouching are scattered across the sky and in the water. The image presents a layer of discoloured varnish and surface dirt.
