including a study of a man seen from behind standing on a rocky ledge, inscribed 'Vinacla/Ossian' l.r., squared for transfer; together with a pencil sketch of two dogs, a pen and ink drawing of a boy crying mocked by a girl, and a watercolour study of waterlilies, and various other works, (12), various sizes, largest 26 x 11.5cm; unframed, Younger brother of Alfred Tidey (1808–1892), he was also taught by his father John Tidey (1773–1849), poet and amateur artist. HT established a reputation as a portrait painter in oil and watercolour. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1839 and from 1855 showed mainly historical and poetical subjects. In 1859, he was elected associate of the New Society of Painters in Watercolours and made a member in the following year. The elegance of his figures at times reflects the influence of 18th-century French painting, especially the work of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721).
