Frame and physical provenance The work is presented within a rich gilded frame, featuring mouldings, fillets, grooves and angular vegetal motifs, particularly suited to 19th-century French painting. Condition Report The work appears in fair/good overall condition, commensurate with its age. The canvas support appears generally stable and regularly tensioned on the stretcher. Examination of the pictorial surface reveals normal signs of aging, with slight abrasions and small surface irregularities. The varnish appears partially altered and slightly yellowed, causing in some areas a general lowering of contrasts and a browner tone. Overall condition: fair/good, given the period. A prudent conservation approach is recommended and, if necessary, a light cleaning to be entrusted to a qualified restorer. *** Photographic note Some photographs of the work were taken using professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and paint surface.
