Henri-Victor Delavelle (1868 - 1919) - Scena Mitologica...

AUTHOR Henri-Victor Delavelle was born in Besançon in 1868 and died there around 1918-1919. Raised in an educated bourgeois family — son of the city’s mayor Victor Aristide Delavelle and uncle of the painter and Benedictine nun Geneviève Gallois — he trained within the framework of late 19th-century French academicism, between his hometown art school and the Paris milieu. Between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th, he combined easel painting with an intense activity as an illustrator for prominent publishers such as Flammarion and E. Bernard, collaborating on volumes by famous authors such as Jean Richepin, Willy, Alfred Rambaud, and Jean Bertheroy. His poetics embody the eclectic taste of the Belle Époque, blending academic classicism, Symbolist suggestions, and the linear elegance of Art Nouveau. Delavelle’s production ranges from historical-mythological and literary scenes — animated by processions, banquets in ancient Greece or in Rome and pastoral idylls like Dafni and Chloe — to the radiant en plein air painting of the French Riviera (Èze, Nice, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat). Technically, he preferred oil on small to medium-sized panel for narrative sketches and illustrations, resolved with a fluid, synthetic, and theatrical touch, reserving oil on canvas and watercolor for landscape views and larger compositions. A refined, niche artist on the fin-de-siècle scene, Delavelle is represented in public collections mainly through his editorial and graphic production, preserved in prestigious European archives such as the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. His paintings on canvas and board are almost exclusively held in private collections — particularly French and Italian — where his studies on classical subjects and Mediterranean views continue to be highly appreciated for their fresh execution and evocative charm. DESCRIPTION "Mythological Scene - The Initiation into the Mysteries", oil on panel, 33x25 cm, signed lower left, datable to the first decade of the 1900s. Provenance: Daniela Balzanetti Gallery, Milan. The work fuses classical erudition with the fin-de-siècle fascination for ancient esotericism. In the nocturnal silence of a sacred forest (temenos), a hierophant wrapped in a severe dark himation leans with solemn gravity to clasp the joined hands of a young neophyte. The girl is blindfolded, in ritual nudity — emblem of purity and initiatory rebirth — while she rests her knees on a reddish drapery or cloak recalling the sacrificial skin of the Eleusinian and Orphic mysteries; behind her a pale blonde female figure keeps watch, a liminal presence between priestess and numinous apparition. Every iconographic detail contributes to explaining the title: from the dark ram with curled horns in the lower left, the chosen sacrificial victim in mystery cults, to the stone altars garlanded with flowers on the right for votive offerings, to the evanescent silhouettes of other initiates and the façades of classical temples towering among cypresses and palm trees under moonlight. The composition rests on a masterful theatrical staging that contrasts the shadowy fourth wall of the trees on the left — whose branches arch overhead above the sacred group — with the deep rightward proscenium of perspective, culminating in the dazzling disk of the full moon. The color play is orchestrated like a suggestive nocturne dominated by cool shades of ultramarine blue, cerulean blues, and slate greens, in which the amber and mother-of-pearl complexion of the young woman, the gold of the standing figure’s hair, and the terracotta note of the ritual carpet stand out, along with the vivid electric blue backlight that outlines the priestly mantle. The brushwork alternates between soft, synthetic modeling of the bodies and a fluid, filamentous, vibrant touch of post-impressionist origin in the grass and leaves, capable of immediately conveying the moist density of night air. The painting exemplary captures Delavelle’s Belle Époque poetics, where a solid academic training opens to dreamlike and mysterious atmospheres of Symbolism and the linear elegance of Art Nouveau, evident in the calligraphic arabesque of the tree canopies. In this work, the cultivated illustrator’s vein for historical-mythological and pastoral subjects (already appreciated in cycles such as Dafni and Chloe) directly blends with the plein air landscape painter’s experience developed on the Côte d’Azur, whose Mediterranean vegetation is transfigured here into a timeless mythic Hellas. Characterized by the fresh execution and evocative charm that mark his most sought-after works, the painting is a valuable testament to Delavelle’s easel production. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. The work is intact in every part with vivid and legible chroma and brushwork. Notable: central crack running vertically through the panel, a clear sign of conservational restoration. The photo of the painting placed in an artificial setting was generated with artificial intelligence and should be considered purely illustrative. Only the remaining photos are valid, which faithfully show the object and its characteristics, both general and detailed. Tracked and insured shipping with proper packaging.
