Henri Cartier-Bresson, photographer, born in 1908, is the eye of a century. Telling his life, deciphering his work, is first to write the history of a gaze. Roaming through his century, the gaze of this lucid wanderer captured the fascination of Africa in the 1920s, crossed the tragic destinies of the Spanish Republicans, accompanied the Liberation of Paris, captured Gandhi’s weariness a few hours before his assassination, and witnessed the victory of the Chinese Communists. Henri Cartier-Bresson was also the assistant of Jean Renoir for three major films – an artist who aims to be a craftsman and who nonetheless founded Magnum, the most prestigious photo agency. He is also the one who fixed the features of his contemporaries, Mauriac in mystical levitation, Giacometti, Sartre, Faulkner or Camus, and so many others captured at the decisive moment, as many portraits for eternity."
