In 1960 he was invited – at the suggestion of his friend Carl Buchheister – to the renowned Villa Massimo in Rome, together with artists such as Gerhard Hoehme and Emil Kies. His work combines graphic precision with experimental material handling and accordingly holds a firm position within post-war German art from an art-historical perspective.
