HEFFELS (Monika). Woodcuts. The Nuremberg School. [Paris], Berghaus International, n.d. Large quarto, illustrated publisher’s cardboard binding. A major study devoted to woodcuts in Nuremberg, one of the principal centers of German graphic art at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. The volume brings together a very extensive collection of reproductions of woodcuts, most of them full-page or double-page spreads: religious scenes, popular depictions, isolated figures, and large narrative compositions. The iconography provides a valuable opportunity to study the work of Dürer’s circle and the leading engravers active in Nuremberg. Abundant and particularly striking black-and-white illustrations, including several large compositions reproduced across two pages. The hardcover binding shows extensive scuffing, scratches, and signs of wear, particularly visible on the covers; the interior is in good condition.
