Pieces of jewellery featuring Oriental symbols such as stars and crescent moons bear witness to the Oriental fashion of the mid-19th century. Unlike in previous centuries—when, as recently as the 18th century, the Turks were still besieging Vienna—the Ottoman Empire was no longer viewed as a threat, but rather as a desirable, foreign, and exotic counterpart. Especially after Prussia’s alliance with the Ottomans in the Crimean War of the 1850s, people came to love the Orient with all its exotic qualities, and the region was subsequently extensively traveled and explored. Pieces of jewellery such as this enchanting brooch illustrate this Orientalism just as clearly as the large paintings in the art exhibitions of those years. The brooch makes a stunning impression with its design in the shape of a large crescent moon enclosing a five-pointed star. The crescent moon holds special significance in Islam, as the Islamic year is based on the lunar calendar and numerous religious festivals and other observances are tied to the appearance of the new moon. Similarly, the fasting month of Ramadan begins only with the appearance of the crescent moon. The brooch is entirely set with shimmering natural pearls. The choice of this particular material is also symbolic and continues the Orientalist motif. Before the invention of pearl farming, fishermen in the Persian Gulf supplied the majority of all pearls, and these shimmering treasures of the sea were regarded as a symbol of the fairy-tale-like wealth and luxury of the Orient. The pearls are set in gold. This piece of jewellery, which found its way to us from London, was created in the final years of the 19th century—and evokes memories of *One Thousand and One Nights* and the magical world of the Orient.
