HEADHUNTER'S HEADDRESS Philippines, northern Luzon Island, Ilongot tribe 19th century Wood, rattan, copper, brass, scarlet hornbill, mother-of-pearl, red cord H 69 cm – W 25 cm Provenance: - Acquired at the Turin flea market around 1985 - Marisa Bonisoli Collection, Turin This headdress, known as a panglao, was worn exclusively by Ilongot warriors who had severed at least two enemy heads. It consists of the skull and beak of a large hornbill mounted on a superstructure projecting above the wearer’s face. The wooden and rattan structure is adorned with a multitude of small brass wire pegs and finely chiseled sections of seashell.
