Hawaii Kingdom Postage Stamps, Lot of 14 with 1893 Provisional Govt. Overprints

Oceania, Hawaiian Islands, Kingdom and Provisional Government of Hawaii. A group of fourteen Hawaiian postage stamps. The stamps date from the Kingdom, Provisional Government, and Republic periods of Hawaii, from the 1880s to the 1890s. Most are Kingdom issues with portraits of Hawaiian royalty, including King Kalākaua, Princess Likelike, and Kamehameha V, in values from one to eighteen cents. Five carry the "Provisional GOVT. 1893" overprint in red or black, applied after the overthrow of Queen Liliʻuokalani. The group also includes two Republic issues of 1894, a one-cent coat of arms stamp and a two-cent stamp showing a view of Honolulu. All fourteen are used. Hawaii issued its own postage from 1851, when the so-called Missionary stamps carried mail between the islands and the American mainland, until 1900, when the territory was absorbed into the United States postal system. The overprinted issues here belong to a narrow and well-documented window: on 17 January 1893 a committee of American and European businessmen deposed Queen Liliuokalani, and the resulting Provisional Government moved quickly to assert sovereignty over existing stocks of stamps. Rather than destroy plates bearing the images of the monarchs it had just unseated, the new administration overprinted them, most in carmine red, some in violet or black, producing the faintly ironic spectacle of Liliuokalani's own portrait franked with the words that ended her reign. The overprint work was executed locally in Honolulu, and varieties of setting, inverted and double impressions among them, are actively collected. Item # 200404
