This original leaf is an incunable from 1493 coming from the Liber Chronicarum, also known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous and monumental works in the early history of printing. The text was drafted by the German humanist Hartmann Schedel, printed by the renowned publisher Anton Koberger in Nuremberg, and illustrated with woodcuts from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The page belongs to the section titled "Sexta etas mundi," dedicated to the Christian era, and highlights the extraordinary spiritual renewal of the 13th century in parallel with the complex and turbulent political events of the Holy Roman Empire. The reverse of the first sheet (Folium CCVIIIv) is entirely devoted to the birth and spread of the two most important mendicant orders of the Catholic Church, wonderfully illustrated by two large woodcuts that depict fortified monastic complexes equipped with churches. The upper part describes the Order of Preachers (Ordo predicatorum), founded by Saint Dominic of Guzmán and approved by Pope Innocent III after the famous vision of the collapse of the Lateran Basilica. The central and lower parts of the page illustrate the Order of Friars Minor (Ordo minorum), founded by Saint Francis of Assisi, describing the choice of evangelical poverty and citing great theologians and saints connected with the order such as Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Bonaventure, and Saint Bernardino of Siena. The front of the following sheet (Folium CCIX) radically shifts the focus to political and dynastic history, with the woodcut caption at the top right reading "Linea imperator[um]." The column is dominated by the solemn portrait of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia (Fridericus secundus). The Latin text recounts in detail his complex biography: ascent to the throne aided by Innocent III, his immense linguistic culture, the splendid Sicilian court, the heated and historic struggles against the papacy and the Italian communes (with the corresponding excommunications by Pope Gregory IX and Pope Innocent IV), up to his death in 1250. In the lower part of the page, a woodcut depicts an astronomer observing a solar eclipse, historically recorded in the text together with other natural wonders and famines of the period.
