Hand-carved wooden tobacco box – pipe smoker in relief – first half of the 20th century A characterful hand-carved wooden tobacco box, executed as a round box with a particularly beautiful and strongly three-dimensional relief on the lid. In the center is depicted a pipe smoker, complete with cap, mustache, coat, and long pipe. The carved portrait gives the box a pronounced folk-art character and makes it a decorative object that directly references the historical culture surrounding pipe smoking and tobacco. The lid is built up from several levels and nicely carved in the wood. Especially the face, cap, pipe, and clothing are strongly contoured in relief. The dark areas around the portrait provide extra depth and contrast with the warm brown patinated wood. Such wooden utilitarian and decorative objects are often categorized as treenware or European folk art within the collecting world: handmade wooden objects where functionality and decorative carving come together. There are scratches, wear, discolorations, and small surface damages visible on the surface and in the carved relief. There has been a fracture in the past that was repaired. The repair is visible and is clearly shown in the photos. The lid closes well when placed in the correct position on the box. When the lid is turned about a quarter turn, it closes a bit less neatly. This is due to the box and lid not being perfectly roundly formed by machine. It is precisely these small irregularities that suit hand-made craftsmanship and clearly show that this is handwork and not a modern, industrially produced object. Signs of use and the old repair can be seen in the photos. The photos form an important part of the condition description.
