HADOL — “GUILLAUME’S NEW YEAR’S GIFT TO THE GERMAN PEOPLE” HADOL (Paul). Guillaume’s New Year’s Gift to the German People. Paris, available at Duclaux, 21 Place du Château-d’Eau, [1870–1871]. A partially colored satirical lithograph depicting William I presenting a proclamation to the German people, accompanied by a figure carrying a man dressed in blue on his back. The text of the proclamation ironically alludes to the promise to take Paris and the sacrifices of war, and demands of the Germans “your children, your money, your food, your ammunition.” Signed “Hadol” on the plate. Print with some highlights of color. Old pencil annotations in the upper margin; browned paper, foxing, creases, and marginal tears; small loss at the lower edge.
