Haasteren

Jan van Haasteren began his career at advertising agency Grijseels, after which he got a job at Nijgh & Van Ditmar. Jan worked as an assistant to Loek van Delden on the strip Smidje Verholen and thereby made his debut as a comic artist. His career as a comic artist really took off when Jan started working at the Marten Toonder Studios. Jan made a switch to Geesink Studio, where he worked in the Geesink Artists department and worked on Rick de Kikker. Additionally, Jan continued to freelance for Toonder Studios. In 1967 he switched to freelance illustrator and worked from home. Jan contributed to strips such as Kappie and Tom Poes. He also drew many strips for Donald Duck, including the Boze Wolf, Donald Duck, Ketelbinkie and Hiawatha. His own work also came more to the foreground at that time. Jan collaborated with many people and drew many comics and advertising posters. His work is described extensively in the book "Jan van Haasteren van striptekenaar tot puzzelfenomeen." In 2006 Jan was distinguished by Het Stripschap with the ‘Bulletje en Boonestaak Schaal’ and in 2013 he was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. For the comic magazines Sjors and Eppo, Jan brought Tinus Trotyl to life. Tinus Trotyl has a morbid love for explosions; one of his characteristic sayings is: ‘Geen woorden, maar knallen.’ The strip is regarded as one of the first Dutch family strips. The strip led to Jan drawing posters, which ultimately led to the world-famous Jan van Haasteren jigsaw puzzles. Original work by Jan van Haasteren is rare and is rarely offered.
