H.J. Wijngaard is best known as a painter of Dutch landscapes. In Nieuwkoop, where he lived for several years, he painted the pools in an atmospheric, distinctive way. When he moved to the area around the rivers, he was seized by the wide river landscape. In a wonderful way he paints the surroundings and the light on the water. Also striking are the exceptionally beautiful skies, which are so characteristic of Wijngaard.
