Gudrun Lorenzen (1904–1968)

Here she finally comes, the painter herself, with her "Self-portrait at the Easel"! Oil painting Danish Expressionism / Bornholm School - close to the style of the Dresden 'Bridge' (Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, Erich Heckel, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff) in the 1920s by a Danish artist, presumably made for private use and therefore unsigned. Frames, nails, rough jute/canvas fabric, sometimes evident grounding, the type of paints suggest a date before 1925. The reported provenance from a Danish auction in the early 1980s speaks for a now sadly unknown Danish artist. Denmark had a Danish Expressionist artist scene with many well-trained painters at the height of the zeitgeist, which, however, were not systematically collected and therefore are not known today. I acquired the picture from an old gentleman and tireless collector, who spent much time in the Baltic Sea region (northern Germany, Denmark) with his boat and brought back old pictures from his travels. His apartment in an old forestry outpost in Mecklenburg was full of such things because he enjoyed them. When, in old age, he had to move, I was able to buy a few of his pictures. If one contemplates what the original paintings by the Bridge artists cost today, then this knowledgeably created contemporaneous painting in genuine expressionism is a very pretty and affordable piece of authentic historical art. This is not academic painting, but consciously raw and expressive. A very vigorous and emancipated self-portrait of this painter Creation time around 1925, quality artistically serious and authentic.
